Riverton Yacht Club
The Riverton Yacht Club, established in 1865, was built on the Riverton Iron Pier. A provision of the club's existence was to designate one room of the structure as a waiting room for passengers of the 70 foot sidewheeler "Wave", a vital link to Philadelphia. Note the hole in the center of the building for carriages and freight to pass through. The original fence on the second storey balustrade had a hole for a cannon for sailboat races.
The Burgee for the Riverton Yacht Club was designed and registered in 1865 after the Civil War and it was designed after the American Flag in the spirit of Patriotism ( a seldom used word nowadays) and after it was made the Federal Government passed a law that private burgees for yacht clubs cannot match or be designed to be similar to the American Flag. However, since the Riverton Burgee was designed before the law (Riverton Yacht Club is one of the oldest in the United States), it is considered to be "grandfathered"
