Team DRYL Freezin’ For A Reason Again….
2011 Polar Bear Plunge
WOW – Where do I begin??
Team DRYL again came through with flying colors! We had close to 40 plungers who raised close to $10,000 for a great cause. What an effort! From what I was told, our team raised the
most money among participating teams and our team had the largest number of
plungers. We also had the person who
raised the most money over all on our team. Mike O’Malley from Penna. YC was
able to raise close to $5K. How cool is that??? What a wonderful thing from a truly, truly
nice guy. One would have thought that
the snow would have chased many away but that was not true at all. This years
turnout was larger than the last two years (wonder if this years
celebrity plunger - Danny Bonaduce had anything to do
with it). It was reported on the news
that close to 1000 plunged and around $150K was raised for the Special Olympics
Of Penna. What
a day !
There were a few Princesses and Past Princesses in the crowd,
and a couple even plunged. Our very own
lovely Queen Rebecca took the dip and was awarded “Best Youth Costume ” for being dressed as The Queen of Hearts. How fitting is that as I have come to realize,
she really is a Queen of Hearts. Members
from her home club, Bordentown YC, led by Commodore Scott Jones dressed to the
theme of Alice In Wonderland and they all really
looked GREAT!
Two school bus loads with members from River Winds YC,
National Park BC and Westville PBA came up and spent the day with us. When you get those 3 clubs together, you can
bet you are in for good time. I have to
give a shout out to WPBA who took home the honors for most plungers on our team
with NINETEEN !!!
We had over 13 clubs get involved with plungers this year and many more
clubs came up to watch and enjoy the festivities.
As with any event, people have to come through with efforts
to make things happen. This event is no
different. I really need to give thanks
to members from my home club NHYC. A few
of my members arrived early (7:30AM) , and shoveled out a place for the tents
we all took safe harbor in for heat, hot coffee, snacks and more importantly –
“The Changing Room”. I just need to
thank a few who humped snow and worked not only for our club, but for the
league - Karen & Fig Newton, Pat Weller, Tony Williams, and Dale Kishbaugh – thank you guys!
After the plunge we all made our way to Penna
YC who again were nice enough to open their doors to
us. They put out a huge spread and
donated $250 for the cause to boot. We
have to give big thanks to PYC Commodore Burke and his members for their
efforts to us, and for us.
All in all – it was a sunny day, a bit nippy, and the water
was a tad cold – but we raised a lot of money for a good cause, got to hang out
with some great people and spend some time by the river we all enjoy.
Here is a link to a video that I found on the net last night
… look closely and you will see our flag waving in the crowd and many DRYL
members.
Here are
some pics from the event, more will be placed up very
shortly ……
