Blue Skies - Bright Sunshine
A Cool Breeze WHAT A DAY !!!
Well Over 300 Attend DRYL
Von Nieda Picnic
Von Nieda Picnic Chairperson Marie Houseworth and her
committee pulled it off. They even got the
Gods of Summer to play nice as the weather was absolutely fantastic! The exact numbers are not in yet but I think
there had to be close to 350 people there.
People were still coming in at 4:00 in the afternoon. The grills and cookers were fired up and
manned all day by the members of Farragut SA who cooked, steamed and served the
attendees until late into the evening.
The Nectars of The Gods were flowing and the music from the DJ Big Mike
& John had the members dancing and singing all the while members competed
in horseshoes, volleyball, and quoits.
The kids were entertained by the Queen and Princesses, and the adults
had games this year that The Horahan Sisters from Bord YC orchestrated. We even had a dunk tank on hand this year and
members got a chance to vote on who would sit on the small seat and watch while
people threw softballs at the small target.
Hitting the small target and at times just hitting the canvas behind the
target would drop the seat. The tank
water was very cold, the aims were very good and needless to say some got very
wet! The good sports who took a wet seat
above the chilly waters in the tank included Mark Brasberger (RWYC), Brian
Sproul (FSA), The Horahan Sisters Kate & Mel (Bord YC ) and our very own Queen Rebecca.
They sat on the seat and indeed got very very wet but to their credit
their harassing was hilarious!
Donations were taken to toss a ball or two and all the proceeds will be
going to The Stewart Family of RCBC.
Dave Houseworth spent the afternoon overseeing the Quoits
Tournament which was won by no other then Yapewi AC. Our DRYL Recording Secretary Erin Maloney
took charge of the Volleyball Tourney which meant she got to spend the day at
the net watching the athletes of the league breaking a sweat. This year the Volleyball Tourney was swept by
Wissinoming YC. The Horseshoes
Tournament was won by a Bridesburg OC that threw ringers when they needed to
with such ease you would have thought they had magnets attached to their shoes! DRYL 2nd VP Steve Zielinski
assisted with the competitions of all competitions the Tug A Wars pulls the
highlight of the day of competitions.
This year the ladies of Penna. YC pulled their way into the Champions
Corner beating the returning Champs from Bridesburg OC. However the men from Bridesburg OC were able
to defend their title by beating a tough Farragut SA team. I know I am being partial here but the best
part of the day for me was when my daughter Jen and son-in-law Mike showed up
with 3 week old baby Madisyn ( the youngest future princess in attendance ). It was Madisyns first Von Nieda Picnic though she did not
sample the great eats that we had to offer or had anything to drink from our
selection she did stay awake long enough to be introduced to friends before
retiring to a nice nap in Grammy Marys arms.
I have to mention and thank all the clubs who came out and
supported this annual tradition and let me not forget to mention that
Bridesburg OC who came out with 40 members.
I do not think BOC does anything small!
River Winds YC came up again in a bus and as always shared their great
attitudes and smiles to everyone at the affair.
Wissinoming YC and Anchor YC also showed up with a nice crowd and were
their always pleasant, good time having group.
All in all it was a great day for a picnic and it seemed like everyone
enjoyed the day at Penna. YC.
Let me
finish by saying thanks to Marie Houseworth and her committee for the job that
they did for us. Marie and her committee
members made this event one that we all enjoyed attending and there was a lot
of talk about next year already! - Juice
